Enough Sheds the Rest

December 10, 2024, was a normal day. TDY back in Washington, DC. I was sitting in the back of a briefing room with my friend Greg, both of us there for a national meeting — the kind where colleagues fly in from across the globe to weigh in on matters that matter, at least to the sections of government we'd spent our careers inside.
Somewhere in the middle of that meeting, Greg looked down. Not at the agenda. At my phones. I had two out — my top-of-the-line work phone, and my personal one, an iPhone 8.
He started with a string of expletives under his breath and ended with something like, "You can't afford a new phone? What is wrong with you?"
We both laughed. It was funny. It still is.
I still have that iPhone 8. It's in my back pocket right now. Same thumbprint, same beat-up case, same phone Greg made fun of.
I am content with my iPhone 8. It fits my hand like it was made for it. I'd rather use a thumbprint than show my face to unlock it. It's enough for me.

Contentment and inertia can look the same from the outside. The test isn't how old the thing is. It's whether it still does the job.
The computer that landed two men on the moon had less memory than one photo on my phone. Four kilobytes. That's it.
July 20, 1969. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon. Margaret Hamilton wrote the code.
She had 4KB and zero margin for error. I have 2GB and I use it to scroll.
Three minutes before landing — the moment with the least room for error in the whole mission — the computer started throwing alarms. Program 1202. Program 1201. It was being asked to do more than it had memory to handle, in that exact second. A rendezvous radar switch was set exactly where the mission checklist told the crew to set it — the error was written into the procedure, not made by anyone in the room. That switch fed the computer data it didn't need during landing, and the data started eating processing power the computer couldn't spare.
Hamilton had prepared for exactly this. Her error detection software recognized the problem, shed the lower-priority tasks, and kept the mission alive.
Without her code, no landing.
The Apollo computer didn't have enough memory for that landing. For three minutes, it said so. Hamilton had already decided what to do about it — before it happened.
That's not a hardware story.
Enough is never about the hardware.
The thing worth measuring isn't how much you have. It's what you do with it.
